The lengthy law journal publication process does not lend itself to the publishing of all deserved pieces that are annually submitted to the Federal Communications Law Journal. However, the staff of the FCLJ realizes the overwhelming need for an avenue for timely and original Responses to articles published in our journal, as well as timely pieces on issues that have yet to be covered in our publication. Issues and ideas are in need of a mechanism to allow scholars and professionals to respond or address such emerging topics without the restraints of traditional publication. It is here that the FCLJ’s online response forum hopes to be of the most benefit. The purpose of our new Online Forum is to allow for the publication and exchange of Responses to published articles and the introduction of new, timely communications law commentary.
Submissions will be held to the same editorial strictures as our traditional printed volume. In accordance with the Journal’s goal of allowing timely Responses, all submissions should be less than 2,500 words or less (including footnotes). Responses should be lightly footnoted as compared with traditional law journal articles. For practical purposes, Responses, Submissions, and Replies in Op-Ed format and containing fewer than 600 words will be given preference.
Responses, Replies, and Submissions will receive quick, but thorough editing and will be streamlined for publication as quickly as possible. All work will be published on our website. The Responses will be consecutively paginated by volume, and can be cited using the following formula:
Author, Submission Title, 60 Fed. Comm. L.J. F. 1 (2008), FCLJ website link.pdf.
Submission Process
Responses will be accepted beginning with Volume 59 of the Federal Communications Law Journal. Submissions should be in Microsoft Word format and citations should conform to the 18th edition of the Bluebook Uniform Citation System.
To submit a Response, simply send an email to fclj@indiana.edu and indicate if and which article you are responding to. All authors should include a short introduction to their article for purposes of a summary that will be published with the Response on the FCLJ’s website.
Submissions may be solicited from time to time. Those submissions will be reviewed with the same fervor as other Responses, and will receive expedited publication. Most submissions will be edited and posted to the FCLJ’s website within three to four weeks.
Acceptance Policy
Any Responses to articles published in the print edition of the FCLJ shall be respectful and grounded in specific research. Each Response or Submission must be tactful and collegial. Although strong opinions are a necessary component for any forum, a proper balance must be struck between opinion and reasoning. The editorial staff’s decision on which Responses to publish is within their sole discretion.
Authors will be expected to provide full disclosure of any conflicts of interest inherent in their submissions. Failure to disclose will result in immediate rejection for publication consideration.
Indexing
Responses and Submissions will remain on the website indefinitely. The responses will be paginated consecutively in the same fashion as a printed law journal.
